i want a hippopotamus for christmas

the title would be my 2nd favorite holiday song. the first is the island of misfit toys from rudolph the red-nosed reindeer.

i dislike christmas. for purely selfish reasons. i never enjoy what i'm  given -- and before you scoff and think about what a bad person i am.. just think: it's always a true reflection of how much my family/'friends' know and care about me. it sounds so ungrateful, i know. and it is i guess. there's just something about 'here you go, some body wash from bath and body works!' or 'here's a lovely book of optical illusions!' that bothers me.. it's not the price; it's certainly not the price. i tend to favor things the *happen* to be rather expensive, but that doesn't mean i want them as gifts. i mean, i do, but i don't. do you know what i mean? and i always opt for cash, just because i feel like then i put it to good use in buying something i want and will use. i feel wretched when i just can't appreciate a gift.

this makes no sense at all, does it? oh well. but the thing about being an only child in a kind of defunct family is that i have this network of amazing friends instead of extended family or siblings.. my friends buy me little $3 gifts from the dollar store like candy or jokes that go with inside gifts, or even the $1 nailpolish from the walmart up the street. and i love it. they know i appreciate them. they know i will use it. i can't help but be incredibly grateful for my friends. i'm so affectionate towards them all, i think it scares them, but it's because i don't have the typical family. i opt to not have the typical family. i could if i really wanted to but.. i'd rather not. you can't pick your family. i'd rather hand-select my security blanket network; those people who know me inside and out and genuinely care and are just so ... great. and for the 2 or so who know about my little blog... thank you. ♥

well, if you actually read all that blubber, thanks.

on a more happy (?) note, here is what i genuinely want for christmas. besides a hippopotamus.

1) a tripod. i need one badly. i hope i get one very much... then i can do outfit posts! blergh. i hate when i wake up in the morning, put on a great outfit, say OH MY GOD, OUTFIT POST! and then it's like... oh. how the fuck would i do this?

2) a dress form. lord knows i can't fit one in my room (which houses 2 dressers, a bookshelf, a bed, my sewing table/craft center, and is about 10 square feet. meh.) but i want one badly. that way, i could do outfit posts WITHOUT a tripod, just by using the dress form, i could plan outfits on it, make cute fabric slips for it, and, of course, help pin & sew things on it. the largest trouble with a dress form for me would be getting one in my size; i'm a double zero (gaining weight though, eeeek)

3) a fire extinguisher. this is probably the weirdest thing i've ever wanted for christmas.. but, i really want to have a wall-e moment. just play with it in the back yard. it'd be the funnest thing ever. and would make for great pictures.
 Styletastic
4) a holga camera. a cheap, fantastic camera. entirely plastic, with vignette and just amazing colours. i want one sooooooooo badly.

5) a fish eye lens for said holga. pretty self explanatory.

6) viva glam cyndi. i wanted viva glam gaga when i was blonde (about a week ago, haha) but now that i'm a burnt-redhead, i'd prefer to go with a striking red.

7) some scented candles. i really really love candles. scented ones are the best though - i love fruity ones. like pineapple or mango or something like that. i'm weird: i like different scents depending on the season -- fruity in the summer, spices like vanilla or cinnamon in the winter, crisp apples in the fall, and florals in the spring. which makes sense i guess.
slumpartad

8) japan. i just want it all. i'm such a nerd; i watch so much anime. well, at least i used to. don't have the time anymore.. but i speak a little, and they are my favorite fashion inspiration. if you read my store post, i mentioned japan and linked to japanese streets. it's a street fashion site based in tokyo (i think) and it's just grand.

10) to be lady gaga. i'm agnostic but... she is god. i swear by it.

11) this.

12) to go to a wedding. a good wedding, out in nebraska or south dakota. rustic and gorgeous. simplistic but beautiful.

13) self confidence. i don't have nearly enough of this.

14) a max costume. i'd wear it everyday for a week.
people always leave.

15) and lastly.. i just want to escape. escape myself, escape this town, just escape. and do it with some damn class and style. almost that i'd-rather-die-than-continue-with-this-treachery feeling. it's not that i have a hard life, it's just not comfortable, per say. i'd prefer a different lifestyle, other people's problems instead of my own, waking up in the morning and worrying about my hair or my nails as if it's the most prominent problem i have. no cares and no worries. and that sounds cliche but... if you knew me, you'd know it's not asking for much at all.
THE BAD EDUCATION

that's it. it's a lot, and i won't get most of it, but if i couldn't dream, i'd surely die.

(i don't own any of these pictures)

ellie goulding

So my store post is two posts down, labeled 'rumors and starry sidewalks'. I started putting it together on the 5th, and so then, when i finished today, it published as if it were published ON the 5th. Blergh. Still learning the basics i guess!

Since i don't want this to be and empty post, here's a song and a beautiful brit i can't get out of my head. I also have a style crush on her. Ladies and Gentlemen, Ms. Ellie Goulding!

defying gravity

I know, I know. I always break promises.

But i have been working on the store post... it's just a long one. with outfits. and lots of pictures. and thought! genuine thought! So, to keep my few followers happy, here's a picture post (actually my pictures, for once):

(this one is my favourite..)

I hope you all are keeping warm! I also start up drama rehearsal tomorrow so we'll see about the timeliness of the next post...

Stay warm! Maybe this beachy picture will help.

rumors and starry sidewalks

Here's the store post:
RUMORS! Rumors is my favorite place in the world. Okay, maybe not the world. I do love England, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Japan.
So, revision = Rumors is my favorite place in all of Virginia. It's a thrift store - technically. But as the owners describe it on their card: Thrift Boutique. Shmancy, right?
I now idolize the owners. I don't even know them. But quite honestly, i hate this town. It's not that bad, I guess, but at my age.. there's nothing i can do. College age -- sure! But not right now. Anyway, these two girls just... started it up!

"Two Girls. Big Dreams. Music. Clothes. Glitter. Gold. Sleeping on Couches. Paint covered hands. A community supporting us. We are taking on the world. We are taking over Richmond."

And that is their story, or so says their little tab on the website. It's basically the story of my life... but it hasn't happened yet. They give me hope.
Let's take a tour, shall we?

This, this is Rumors. (it's bigger than that. i just have a small camera)

Purses, stairs, and a few streetlights. No big deal.

Some cute sweaters on display with accessories - not included with purchase of sweaters (i asked).

Close up of some of the fabulous vintage/just plain dashing brooches. If you're curious about the 804 one, that's Richmond's main area code. Like reppin' for your hometown.

I felt like this would be something Zana Bane of Garbage Dress(another one of my idols) would wear if it were black. The leather and studs and patch-style of the dress seems very her.. Now i'm regretting not buying it! But, I am vegan. Silly me with my morals.
Dresses!

Shoes!

Some super-cheap super-charming shoes. I love Rumors; nothing is usually over $10.

I love the patterns on these skirts...

They sell guys' clothing, too!

Not to mention some impeccable and wild interior design. It's just so... urban! GAH! I love it. Can't get enough.
Nifty brushed bronze mirror that i want very badly.

The view from the back of the store.

I know this is a fuzzy picture, but OH MY GOD it's a deer hook. In my opinion that's the best thing ever.

The outfit i wore that day (in case you can't read the tiny little white print, sorry about that): Gap via Rumors vintage blue denim shirt (i love the stitching in the front -- even though it's a large and i'm and extra small!), $6; Rue 21 elastic belt, $3; Urban Outfitters patterned dress, $50; knee highs that i stole from my mother, $5; Xhiliration grey flats via Rumors; $6.

(Want to shop similar clothes? Shirt, belt, dress, socks, flats) Sorry some of those are expensive, i just know the outfit doesn't look to great and honestly a little shabby in the picture but i love this outfit... But oh well!

And this is the checkout. Adorned with jewelry. Drool.

Well, that's it for Rumors! If you're ever in Richmond you should stop buy - it's definitely one of my favorite places. It's on the college (VCU) campus so it's pretty smack-dab in the center of the city and is surrounded by lots of other neat stores.

I'll leave you today with a picture i took on the same day.. There's a tile in front of an art gallery with little stars of light on it. It made my day, and is one of my favourite pictures now.

twiggy pop

I don't think anybody knows how obsessed I am with all things Twiggy. I've literally started doing my makeup exactly like this. Yes.

Outfit posts, store posts, lots of posts tomorrow if i can get my damn camera working. Stupid point and shoots.

i wish to pose a question.

A completely irrelevant question. If you had $50 to spend on American Eagle Outfitters, what would you buy? You may or may not know that I am a strong believer in not spending more than $30 on any one item. But, the other day, a gift card fell out of the sky. Kind of.

They inducted me into this survey thing, u.talk.back, and when you work up a certain amount of points, they give you giftcards. American Eagle, magazine subscriptions (nothing really good like Vogue or anything), Gamestop, etc.

Sorry if this post has turned into a giant add. But according to my mother, that's all my blog is. Oh well! So, after a few years of taking numerous mind-numbing surveys, i had enough points for a $50 ae giftcard. And i'm stuck. Help.

If you could buy any item/combination of items from them for under $50, what would it be, dear friends? Leaning towards these items:

AE Mini Messenger Bag

Also, i might be having some street fashion posts later.. I'm in a college town for Thanksgiving, maybe i'll find something interesting.

family photos

I dug these up out of some old family albums... The first one is circa 90's, but the rest are 60's-70's. Even though I'm partial to the 20's, I still love looking at the clothing from the "olden days". Oh dear god, and look at the hair! Hah, I found beehives galore in the albums. Maybe these will inspire you to go a little retro this weekend.

My favorite has to be the one with the azaleas. It's just gorgeous, isn't it? Looks like something from out of a movie or an old photo shoot. It's that kind of candidly pretty picture.

In case you haven't noticed, the blog got a makeover. I finally had some time to work on it and now i think it's actually presentable! I'm happy with it. The background for the banner is the cover of one of the vintage photo albums. How i love florals ♥

Expect a few DIYs later this weekend... Today I have the day off, so I have some free time to slack off and have fun with some shiny new things from Jo-Ann's.

need

Not only is this a verb and a noun, it's also a store. An amazing store. Think Urban Outfitters but (dare i say it) better. Overpriced, but better.

Chamonix

I need these shoes.

Some more Need Supply Co. goodies:

Basketcase

Basketcase shirt. I feel like i could make this, but i still love it.

dear blogosphere;

I've not deserted you yet.

School sucks. A lot.

You may or may not know that I go to a Governor's school, which is pretty much all AP, Honors, and wonderful advanced things like that.

It's also hell.

I have literally NO time. I just caught up on about a months worth of blog reading material that i haven't been able to read until today, and the only reason i could today is no homework because tomorrow i have PSATs. Lovely.

Another thing: Screw structure! I only established the weekly contributions a few posts ago, but i have already missed several deadlines. My bad! From now on, it will be rare posts until breaks, and just when there is something so spectacular i HAVE to show you.

Don't worry, I still love you.
